Rant and Reminder: Karma and Reputation

Hello People,

Merry Christmas to all of you. It is seldom that I do say anything on the forum, but I was just browsing and read several notes which reminded me that I wanted to put something to you since a while. That is 'Karma' and 'Reputation' are parts of the game and should be treated that way.

That means: If you are suddenly realizing that your god is constantly mad at you because your karma makes you reek like an old fish, then it is nothing you should toss away just because it's hindering for you. If you find yourself suddenly blocked from the service of certain instances, cities or else, you should act as according your char would do and not go like 'meh, the system is flawed, I don't care'.

Sure, the system is flawed ( I have my dislikes with it ), but it is currently the set system and it should be treated as a part of the world.

I understand where you are coming from Allalltar. I do take issue with one part of it though. What happens when the flawed system is doing something that is completely out of the control of the player and screwing them over?

All in all though for the everyday occurrence I do agree that you should try to roll with the punches not try to powergame your character to have 100% karma (unless it makes sense for your character to do so)

There is no /such/ flaw in the reputation system, it works rock solid as intended. I think Alla wanted to say that he does not agree with every detail of the mechanism itself, but there is no bug or such causing erratic behavior. In other words, if your char's karma or rep appears to be ruined, there always is a valid IG reason, do not assume any system bug.

No, there is no bug, the system is working as intended. Sometimes, the system is a little 'simple minded', though. That is all I meant.

It just saddened me that I've seen so many people treat the system as if it could ignored like a pair of clothes you didn't like. Karma matters and so does reputation.

Given that both Allalltar and Louis declared the reputation system working as intended, and I assume that this statement implies that there are no bugs - as logically bugs would imply that the system would not work as intended - I have one question concerning this, as this puzzles me slightly:

What reason do the builders in general offer to players attempting to account for the fact that a darkelf NPC ICly refers to another character "being a devout follower of the laws of the good gods" and assume that characters, who unbespoken on the "bad side" do happen to kill darkelves, thus the racial brothers of said darkelf or supposed enemies of their race (i.e. if the one asking the question happens to be an elf), have a "great reputation" in a supposedly evil area (be it Asador, Eal-Deliah or any other non-highly "good" area really), all followed by a smile of that very NPC afterwards?

I refer to an example given in another thread - let me copy paste and exclude the name of the character in question, as the standard response would be given to whoever asks the question anyway + happen to have the same reputation in the "area":

Xyz asks the long-legged dark-skinned male darkelf in Quenya: me

The long-legged dark-skinned male darkelf sings in Quenya: You follow the laws of the Good Gods devoutly. I have heard nothing but great things about you recently.

The long-legged dark-skinned male darkelf smiles.

Could Allalltar and Louis perhaps explain this? Admittedly I have slight difficulties understanding this but then again it was not me who wrote that the system works as intended either. ;)

If I remember right, that (specific) situation was reported and changed.

Howdy, just a small feedback on your question, the reputation system still works as intended :) But that does not mean that every object in game using the rep system is entirely bugfree - in this mentioned case the npc was coded wrongly, using the rep system in a slightly misleading way, leading to that kind of unlogical information. I would suggest to recognize that behavior as what it is, a minor and very obvious bug, not a design-flaw in the entire rep system.
