Roleplaying Merc enemies

Lets say a merc, lets call him Joe, does something like kill the people and guards of a guild, lets call them the Tunnel Snakes, while under the orders from someone else.

Joe goes home after work and drinks some beer.

Next day Joe goes into work and gets hired by some newbie character. But today the Tunnel Snakes are mad at Joe. Joe gets killed by the Tunnel Snakes and the newbie is questioned!

The newbie had no idea Joe was up to this bad stuff. The Tunnel Snakes now don't like the newbie because he teamed up with Joe.

Now What if the next day Joe gets told to attack the Tunnel Snakes again? And then the next day? Over and over? Tunnel Snakes won't like that very much.

My question is, How do we RP this? Do we want this to be something that happens? If not, how do we prevent this?

Thanks
much love poLUMI

damn good question.

best solution i would know is deviding the mercs into different groups,
which can only be hired by people with special alignment.

mercs paying court sentences from earned money could be an option.

mercs denying offers that have brought them into serious troubles is surely hard to code.

generally i guess the Jumping Snakes do very well roleplaying the situation with the npc merc completely normal.
shows lacks in code and definition and gives possibility to develop a better working version, maybe

Yeah!

This was sort of already implemented. For instance the mercs in Bandama will only join you if you have a high reputation in Elvandar. But Asralite mercs will follow people with good reputation in Arborea and in the current "meta" of the game that means that potentially baddie folks can use Asralite mercs to attack goodie folks.

One way would be to just have the people it affects talk to wizards. But that still doesn't stop the newbie who has no idea. But newbies can pretty much be handled with kid gloves anyways!

Good suggestions, I like the paying court sentences! Get some money from those dastardly mercs!
