Becoming Shao-Lin, and fighting Unarmed

I'm a new player to Geas, and I've been looking around at what I want to do and whom I'd like to eventually join. When I saw the description of the Shao-Lin I was immediately intrigued.

What I'd basically like to know, is, how can I go about joining them? I'm guessing I need to hope to meet a monk IC and talk to them and express an interest, which is all very well and fine.. but well, I guess what I really want to know is, details about fighting unarmed. Do Shao wear armor? Wield any weapons? What skills should I practice?

Again, I suppose I can wait to ask a monk in-game, but first I'd have to find one. I know so little about the world, I've barely ventured out of Arborea to fight gremlins and nibblers. I would prefer not to be wasting my time training weapon and armor skills if I'm not going to end up using them.. and I'd also kind of like confirmation on the whole 'unarmored' thing before I sell all my old gear.

Thanks for any help!

I think the finer details can be dealt with in-game.. most of these questions can be answered even by non-monks who know something about fighting.

But to give some tips for now, think "light armour and weapons," rather than "no armour or weapons." Unarmed combat is of course essential, but monks have a bit of liberty to use weapons or not, and wear as much armour as they can as long as it doesn't interfere with martial arts (which doesn't take much.. but is usually more than "nothing").

But you're right about the general process of joining the monks. Only certain ones can let you in, and you should bring them shiny things.

Unarmed combat skill, deflect, defence. Elbow and knee and other unarmed specials are probably ok too.

The rest should be shao-skills so in order to learn them, one would have to join them (though in the past learning-by-watching was possible ...)

The normal way to join a guild is to find a 'master' of guild and convince him/her/it to accept yourself as a new menber.
Some guilds have a npc-interface for joining. Ask the npc at entrance of guild and he/she/it will write you in an applicationlist. If noone objects your appilcation you can join the guild at the npc after some time.
Not every guild supports this and it is always the better to join via a master.
He/She/It can give you value hints and explain the guild rcommons and rules.

How long does it take to get into the Shao-Lin?

As you've probably been told many times in game the reason you're not in the shaolin yet is that very few black belts are active. How long until one of them resumes playing i dont know.

Black belt shaolins need more incentives to be active!

Maybe just ask the wizards to add the shao-lin guild to the number of guilds with an npc that allows joining.

I'd rather not see this happening in case of occupational guilds.

It is happening.
It is already possible with the crusade and asralites.
I agree and would personally wish NPC joining impossible with all guilds except the craft ones.

As far as I know, only the first step (getting into contact with guild leaders) is simplified?

you can ask a guild npc about joining, then after three days, if no one objects, you can.

You're forgetting that the shaolin have a secret guild location.

Secret guild location.. and I do not think poZehren is correct if he was referring to the Shao-Lin.. since everything I makes me think it is still not possible to join without a player's help.

I should be around more now.. and if you ask around you might learn the name of a Shao-Lin master seen recently, and I would suggest trying to plant some idea in her mind as to when and where you might be found.

Ahh, well I really am a new adventurer in this world; I don't stray far from the slaughter of gremlins and nibblers, unless I'm home in Arborea. I've been distracted by other affairs lately (a strange dream about another world, a world of war, ravaged by a cataclysm.. *cough*), but I should also be around a bit more..

You know, WoW may have graphics, but once you hit the max level all you do is grind gear and end game dungeons. It's boring.

Geas may not have graphics, but it's usually never boring for me. Roleplaying never hits max level.

Hmm. That is a problem then. I understand the reasoning behind it (if a guild is inactive for one reason or another, new players need to get a chance to revive it) but to completely bypass other players that way seems ... fairly problematic to me. :/

My preference would be to use another system.

Guild leaders can object to people that register their wish to join with the NPC. But you can definately join Asralites through an npc, even get promotions.

So I think it would be just fair to allow this for all occupational guilds, be they active or not. That some of them are harder to find and might have additional requirements doesn't restrict that.
