Finding RP and Gwen

Hey Geas...ers?

I just joined a couple of days ago after looking through a bunch of information and was curious about a couple of things. It may be these have already been answered elsewhere, but I didn't see them. Hopefully I'm not rehashing points.

1) Are there common places to find RP? I've run into people near Virle, but wasn't sure if there were better places to go.

2) How is starting religion handled? I had started with interest in becoming a Gwenite, but so far haven't been able to figure out where her temple is or if she has a presence in other cities.

3) Is it feasible to play a mostly peaceful character? I had assumed that it would be fine because I could just focus on roleplay over combat, but I'm not actually running into all that many people. Might just be I'm looking in the wrong areas. Still, I'm starting off searching for herbs hopefully to sell or use for things.

Thanks! This game seems really interesting and I can't wait to get more involved!

The number of players on Geas waxes and wanes depending on the time of year. Right now is a lull, but it will pick back up eventually. The market centers of Elvandar and Arborea are good places to run into folks. (By the NPC's Beladan in Elvandar and Volog in Arborea.) There is a good number of players for various IC reasons who cannot linger about in Elvandar and Arborean lands without getting hunted down and killed. These folks, if you run into them, may or may not choose to stick around and RP, but please don't be sore if they don't. Also, Skyrim just came out a few days ago; so for a while, several players, myself included, won't be on much if at all.

You can play a peaceful character, and in fact there is an entire guild in the game centered around pacifism. (It may be impossible to join it right now though.) As for Gwen, her shrine is in the wilderness and she has no presence, to speak of, in the cities. (An alternate character of mine is one of the few Gwennites regularly around these days.)

It can be boring during the lulls; however, they don't last forever, and despite the odd issue here and there, the overall game is quite good. So I'm sure we all hope you don't get too discouraged if you don't run into too many of us at this time, and I'm certain we'll all look forward to meeting you IG.

Aaah, I see. Skyrim would cause a break in things. I'll be sure to keep on hanging out by Beladan and Volog! We're already pretty tight, hanging around, watching Volog get pushed down by guards, the usual.

I've run into a couple of people already who I'm fairly certain are evil characters of some kind or another which has been interesting! Admittedly, I've not had a huge amount of time to talk with them, but hopefully that'll come up more.

The way I was thinking about playing the peaceful character was not to go into the actual guild, because my understanding is that if Gwen was to get a guild, it would be a primary guild. So I was thinking that I would refrain from taking a primary guild, but maybe get an occupational guild to start putting some cash together and have some things to collect.

I'm sure you've heard this before, but I would love to try to bring more Gwen presence into things. It looks like the wiki has some kind of a project devoted to that and I'd love to get involved. Even if it doesn't end up leading to a guild, at least having the RP of that! Got some sermons up my sleeves as well. Guess I'll just start exploring around hoping to find the temple!

I can totally understand lulls in games. And honestly, now that I've got herbalism sort of figured out, I'm not quite so bored. Just collect, analyse, sell for now (because I fail every analyse), but that's something!

Welcome!

It kind of depends. If there aren't that many people on, they may be hard to find. People tend to congregate in the city squares of Elvandar and Arborea by the fountain and Beladan/Volog. Or sometimes at the crossroads with the white tree or by Virle. And you might find other newbies hunting by the gremlins or the nibbler hut.

Gwen doesn't have as many followers as, say, Taniel, but there are a few active ones around. You can likely ask around about her temple. It's a bit more out of the way.

And you can play a peaceful character. Most people tend to do at least some hunting of NPCs, but there are guilds like the Scribes with some long-standing characters who don't engage in much combat. There are other parts of the game you can get involved in, like crafting, etc. Gwen is a great goddess to follow since her followers believe in loving everyone and dislike senseless fighting.

I stopped playing my ardent Gwennite cause I kind of lacked a direction with her, but we were trying to set up some sort of Gwennite clergy or cult. (Unfortunately, Zehren, who was also a large part of that, also stopped playing.) You could ask Per, I think, if he could give you access to the wiki page to see some of the ideas we have posted there.

Welcome to the game.

As mentioned by others already, the cities of Arborea and Elvandar, and more specifically their pubs and marketplaces are good places to meet others. Priests and artists often meet there to preach or perform and that should open up possibilities to roleplay or just a simple chat.
If you haven't found the Gwen shrine yet, don't hesitate to ask in game. Many people know the location or can at least point you to someone that does.
For someone new to the game, I'd like to point you also into the direction of the libraries in Elvandar and Arborea. They hold books which hold information that can be helpful to young explorers. Some hold real information, some stories, some "just nonsense" (a personal opionion here, mind you) and some can be used to actually help improve on certain skills.
The craft guilds, which are located mostly in Arborea, with the exception of the gem cutters guild in Underground, can also be an interesting place to meet people or to earn some money.

Welcome to the game!

I have two pacifist sidechars (one of them is a gwennie), and it's usually easy enough to find some roleplay with them when something like 15 people are online.

I want to add to what Fernao said, that books actually take a while for a Newbie character to make any use of as far as ingame lore is concerned - you just can't understand a word of them in the beginning, so don't get frustrated ;)
But there should be some common font learnbooks around, too, I think, that should make learning to read a bit faster.

Thank you all very much! Lots of information to go through and get accustomed to, but I'm getting to it! I'm thinking I won't go trying to get too involved in expansion of Gwen until after I'm a little more in the game. Still, I'd love to be able to start preaching even if I'm writing the sermons myself with no actual benefit.

Sounds like reading may start out a little tough. Ah well, it'll just be like herbalism. Keep at it and I'll start to have successes.

Thank you all so much for the tips! I really appreciate it!

Don't forget to roleplay a terrified little kid when a big nasty darkelf in a bone mask comes up and starts talking to you. We have enough super tough high discipline people around now, we don't need another :P

I'd been thinking that as of yet, I don't necessarily know that darkelves are all that dangerous. Sure, I heard things from my elders, but what do they know?

Unless I'm misunderstanding the culture of things and I should really already be terrified. I'm open to terrified.

Also, asking for help with finding the temple worked! I'm thinking I need to start asking for help more.

It's usually a good way to go with a first character to assume that he hasn't seen much of the world yet, so it's perfectly in character to ask around - it's a good opportunity for roleplay and you can get to know the world together with your char.

Although, if you look at someone and he's wearing a scary looking bone mask, you might have enough reason to get frightened, I suppose. If it suddenly turns dark, and then you're surrounded by figures in dark robes... well, I don't know about you, but I'd be pretty scared if that was me ;)

Welcome to Geas, right now there are some in depth story lines going on, and it is a good time to kind of see all the neat stories developing, although sometimes that causes some of the sides to be rather busy, like when Orcoths are slaughtering Elvandar Citizens. It is all a very dynamic story and its great to have you as part of it.
