You can, but only in very specific places, and you need certain items/materials. Generally book writing is done by members of the scribes guild, who have the easiest access to what's needed for such a thing.

Well, GEAS is set in a medieval atmosphere, where it's not uncommon for the usual person to be somewhat (if not sometimes completely, depending on which part of the world you're in) illiterate. So you could say it's a rare breed, so to speak.

Speaking of which, I really wish that there were some other places to write books than in libraries and such. It would be wonderful to have the ability to write extended to pubs as well, if not over the whole MUD. It doesn't seem to make a lot of IC sense that one would suddenly be unable to write even when sitting on a peaceful hill in Giat with all the right materials, but if it's a coding difficulty, I understand.
If this has already been changed since I last tried to write a book, I apologize.

I think one reason writing has been limited is between making book writing more accessible, and people teaching their buddies otherwise exclusive skills, it would quickly put the scribes guild out of a purpose (besides recent advancements in magic, though magic is more of a personal goal than a guild pursuit, from what I know).

Oh man. I'm so excited to one day see or at least hear of magic in action in game. I feel like you're holding a carrot on a string in front of me every time I hear it mentioned.
