And yes, Catholic churches/monasteries can have sometimes... graphic displays. I guess people used to have a different perspective on mortality.

This picture was taken at an unfortunate instant. I was actually hiding, getting ready to backstab a crusader. And then somebody yelled "Cheese" and i was caught in a blinding light. And then i couldnt backstab the crusader.

We call them "charnel houses" (I love that word) (from Latin caro, carnis for flesh, through French) or ossuaries.
Unlike in America, where land is plentiful, oftentimes in Europe cemetery space was limited, and it was common to reuse graves. The skeletal remains would be disinterred and translated elsewhere.
