I guess with the rise of graphical online multiplayer games the old-fashioned RPGs with parties and 1st person perspective lost their appeal. Why would you want to have a decent story-line and character development if you can "group up and l3wt da enemy" online?Vargrahim wrote:Why are there no such games ? =(

Nothing fancy, but they're a lot like the old Wizardry games. (At least the first one is. I haven't tried the sequel yet.) Not exactly recent though...
This is both a feeble attempt to entertain Varaghrim and to try to explain to Tessa what we're talking about. [/url]

Maybe something like http://falconseye.sourceforge.net/ is what you are looking for. It's basically just a nethack clone with a nice 3d frontend.
There's a Screenshot if you wonder what it's look like:

The ones I can think of aren't exactly new and if you're into those games you've probably played them already. Baldur's Gate I and II (II also has an addon but i forgot the name, lots of giants there) and Neverwinternights. I don't know about Neverwinternights but Baldur's Gate II is pretty boring in multiplayer cause the mage usually pauses the game and pulls out all his spells while the fighters just wait to get to do their next hit.

dungeon siege I, dungeon siege: legens of aranna (which is an addon but includes the main-program) and dungeon siege II are also nice to play in multiplayer. yet DS focuses more on action like diablo then on roleplay, still it was a lot of fun, last time i played it during a lan-party.
BG multiplayer-option is a pain in the a.. I'll never use it again.

If discussing oldies, I must recommend both Ultima Underworld games, so far, graphics aside, I haven't encountered such great atmosphere as in UW1.
But of more "recent" games, Gothic 2 was really nice, and Arx Fatalis was a nice "remake" of the old classic UW1.

I just finished playing Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. I'm actually not a big fan of that Vampire/Goth stuff, but I can say it was (bugs aside) the best RPG I played since Planescape: Torment. It's also as depressing as Torment was, because Troika - the company which produced it - went out of business, and there's probably little to no chance that there'll be a sequel. Anyhow, if you are looking for a high-quality, immensely entertaining and also cheap (should be now in the bargain bins of stores) single-player RPG, check it out, because good games should be supported.
