Mounts
Hello everyone!,
with the increase in size of Forostar I feel like maybe it's time to jump
the gun and get a horse already.
All my former experiences with riding in game have been both cumbersome
and very expensive though. Every single mount I've had, I've lost to either
armaggedon or bugs or have been slain by monsters or other players. Sometimes
it's a bit difficult to know what actually happened. Did I forget to stable
my mount? Did a player steal my ticket? All of this comes from the way
mounts worked several years ago (as in, almost 8 years ago) when I was an
active player, so some of it might have been fixed over time and some of
it might be the same.
So I was wondering if there is a number of "best practices" or guide that
the more experienced characters could share to make having a mount an
enjoyable experience. The main showstopper for me at the moment is the cost
of purchasing a mount, given the certainty that I *will* lose that mount
during the learning process. Your insight might help me and other players
be more knowledgable before taking taking the risk to jump into riding!
To get the conversation going, I'll open with some questions:
- How do you avoid losing your mount to armaggedon/room resets?
- Is there a way to recover a mount lost this way?
- How do you know if your mount was killed or lost/bugged/destroyed by arma?
- Is there a way to keep your mount tickets safe?
- What is the actual in game difference between plow, riding and war mounts?
- Which skills are involved in the usage of mounts?
That should be enough to get the ball rolling I hope!
Thanks in advance for your insight.

Re: Mounts
Usually when you lose something because of reboots and such, try mailing a wizard. Has worked for me. If your loss was not indeed due monsters/players there is a good chance you will get your stuff back. When dealing with mundane stuff I have not bothered anyone but when I have lost a custom/rare item due some RL accident I have asked it restored.
War horses are the only ones that can be trained to charge and are meaner and harder to train. I am unsure about the difference between plow and riding horses. I think riding horses have better stats?
Keeping your mount ticket safe will be a constant headache, in a way. If someone really, REALLY wants it from you...good luck!
As for skills they are animal handling, riding and mounted combat, I think.

never leave your mount unattended standing around when you log out. Always stable it.ferranifer wrote:- How do you avoid losing your mount to armaggedon/room resets?
Mail the wizards, always worked for meferranifer wrote:- Is there a way to recover a mount lost this way?
Well, I usually have a log running, so I can just look up if I stabled the poor thing or not.ferranifer wrote:- How do you know if your mount was killed or lost/bugged/destroyed by arma?
100% safe? No. Maybe strike a deal with the thieves.ferranifer wrote:- Is there a way to keep your mount tickets safe?
plow horses are the only ones being able to pull a cart. war horses are the only ones that can wear armour, can be used for charge attacks, and will only allow their owner to touch them and the saddle-bag tied to the saddle. The last two points require the warhorse to be sufficiently trained of course which does take a LONG time.ferranifer wrote:- What is the actual in game difference between plow, riding and war mounts?
animal handling, riding and mounted combat. The last only when you fight while mounted.ferranifer wrote:- Which skills are involved in the usage of mounts?
As for making riding/owning a mount an enjoyable experience....
a) Ask a friend to be allowed to ride their trained plow or riding horse to get into "the mood", aka train up some basic riding skill.
b) Don't buy a warhorse as first mount! They are hard to train and training them usually results in dozens of broken bones if you are not an accomplished rider and horse trainer yet!
[c) Try out one of the "dark" mounts if you get the chance...]
One last tip: Maybe ask someone else, an accomplished rider e.g., to buy a mount for you, might save you dozens of gold coins! There are a number of factors that play a role when it comes to determining the selling price for a mount.

Re: Mounts
Just one comment there:
The reboot is an ooc-event, and will be treated accordingly by all wizards. But still we expect our players to do their best not to lose their mount during reboot, for your planning, the reboot occurs precisely every friday, 12:15 pm CET.
PS:
Oh, and no, we will not restore piles of herbs, branches or other crap lost during reboot, neither nuggets, gems or anything else you can regain in game with more or less effort - We only restore very very very expensive items (like mounts) if lost in the dark.

Re: Mounts
Concerning reboot, it should be noted that you cannot log it while the countdown is running, and the countdown starts 15 minutes prior to reboot, meaning at 12:00 pm CET.louis wrote:Just one comment there:

PS. I added a mounts section to the wiki. With some of this and some additional information.

Re: Mounts
Hmm are you sure about not being able to log in during the 15 minute countdown? I always thought you were able to.

Re: Mounts
You can stay logged in if you are logged in already. But if you log out during the 15 min countdown you can't log back in and if you try to log in during that countdown you still can't.
