Yes that is quite frustrating. Especially when characters just say "Obviously my *god* tolerates it, because they didn't punish me" This can be really frustrating. Sometimes it seems the majority seems to fill up the MUD with modern day philosophy and ideologies, like they forget the MUD isn't 2014 earth. It is a fantasy world with completely different values and concepts.

The only real cure is good rp and player responsibility. When characters act on it and aren't afraid "to hurt their ooc friends feelings" otherwise this MUD turns into a coded chatroom with fantasy avatars and the only RP is flirting and bouncing around from relationship to relationship

I believe the druids are in a quite good shape now (and the guild is open) - consider to play one and help us to identify and fix the last 2-3 bugs

If druids are open, how can one join, seeing as they're still quite rare? I have a character who I've been grooming somewhat to join them, and would love to know how. Might even be the complete about-face turn breath of fresh air I need to stick around longer.

The way is always the same - go for it ingame.

I miss this game and I miss the community. There are a few big things that always bothered me, though. They're mostly based upon the designers/developers' philosophies, so it's unlikely that they'll be changed.

1. Game mechanics need to be more transparent.

Murky game mechanics are supposed to put an emphasis on roleplay, but this is not what actually happens. Instead, OOC chat about game mechanics is fostered, and enfranchised players have an advantage over new or independent players. When players are given information about game mechanics, they have fewer feel-bad moments when they realize things don't work as they had expected. Intuition is just not enough.

2. Roleplay enforcement needs to be made a bigger deal; the best way to do this is also transparency.

What's expected of us as roleplayers by the designers simply NEEDS to be well communicated. I remember when I was involved in a Rogue's Guild plot where I believed that my small group of player characters were important enough to decide upon the entire course of the Guild, I was put in my place by NPCs and code developed by the guild wizard in order to reign in our rebellious roleplay. While I was offended then, I would not have been had I understood the expectations and had the tools available to not act out of line.

That's one example, but there are others. Discussion about design intent and exploits should be done transparently, with the assumption that any true roleplayer intends to play within the intent of the designers or at least argue why not. I would feel better about playing the game if I knew that people could be trusted to know what's expected and know that going against it would lead to confrontation or consequences.

3. Support for OOC discussion instead of a vague disapproval of it

Simply playing the game does not give the full experience, and there are so many stories that are effectively private. What makes a roleplaying game is its stories and its characters.

Concrete rules and a safe place for OOC discussion of actual game events and content would bring me back. I could participate in the game without being a full-time player, and I could share my fun stories without fear of repercussions (the two major ones being the fear of IC cheating and Moderator backlash).

We should be able to have an OOC history. We should be able to have discussions about good and about questionable roleplay. I want to have meta discussions about the roleplay, not just the game mechanics.

Those are the major things that I always wanted when I played Geas. I got what I wanted in unapproved channels (Messenger communities, etc), but this does absolutely nothing for players who are not enfranchised while also feeling vaguely reprehensible. Instead of making us whisper, let's talk in the open and work together to build the game we want.

Sounds strange... but I would be interested in permadeath or a version of Geas that has permadeath.

Anyone else that would be interested in that and come back for that?

What would the required changes be?
Surely, less chance of getting killed.
Faster character development.
Some way of transferring quest experience or some skills to the next character?
What else?

What would change in the game world?
Surely, it would become more role play intense, but Geas has a great classless, level less foundation for this.
The difference between newbies and oldies would be smaller.
Everything would need to happen a bit faster, character development, guild acceptance..
Surely a lot of unpredictable things would happen.

There are just not enough permadeath muds around.

If Geas changed that much it would be a different game and I would probably stop playing

I think the point was that it would be an independent game. It would not overwrite the Geas we know. Could be fun, I agree.

I didn't see the part where it's an independent game though. I'm all for having more lowbies kicking around, but yeah im not a fan of permadeath at all.

I personally wouldn't play a version of Geas with permadeath. It would require so many changes that it wouldn't be Geas anymore. For starters, the game's damage model would make combat extremely dangerous, and a Geas without violence and war wouldn't be Geas.

On that note, there is a reason there aren't a lot of permadeath MUDs around. Their long-term investment mechanisms tend to be weak or poorly designed. The ones I've tried were full of risk-averse players role-playing ridiculous situations because nobody would ever fight, so conflict was never part of the equation, which is... well, surreal. Nobody wants to be the nameless soldier that dies in the war frontline.

From my personal point of view, I am not willing to invest my time into such a transient thing. I expect long term returns from my time investment so I naturally steer away from forms of entertainment that do not provide it. Even when I play roguelikes, I don't invest so heavily on them emotionally as I would in a RP MUD. And I tend to choose roguelikes with a higher layer of long-term progression anyways.

Going back to @Olrane's post and at risk of doing a bit of forum necromancy.. I agree with the big points he presents. His post seems to have killed the thread though. Any thoughts on his ideas?

As for Olrane's last post, I agree with the points he made. Smooth flow of information in general is crucial, as most aches we see here come from misunderstandings.

As for permadeath, perhaps allowing permadeath experienced alts. There could be preset roles and characters that represent more common elements of life in Forostar. Or they could be whatev. They could be resurrected if someone drags them to a priest capable of doing so but if they die neglected and alone they would be gone.

You could hop in the shoes of a common orc, a travelling merchant, a mercenary or a brigand to name a few. The point is these guys would not be your epic level adventurers the game sees dime a dozen these days.

God, I'd love to see that, Delia. Let us take the role of what would usually be an NPC, but make it so that when we die, we're Gone. For Good. That'd bring an element of change to the game, I think, that it's currently lacking.

If everyone playing a super godly character decided to retire that character.

I think it is also a question how you play that character. Is there any interest to participate and investigate every piece of gossip there is? For your character that is. Of course we players always jump when there is something happening. ANYTHING. But should we, really?

Would the common thief interest you at all anymore? Surely you have underlings who can take care of that or perhaps it is a problem for other people to worry about altogether.

Goblin sightings past Amward bridge? Nah, the Asrals are there. But now that you mention it there was that time twenty years ago when I did quite bit of fighting myself too! And could you pass me that beer over there?

Personally I see Delia more as an NPC who enables stuff for other characters.

"Can you train me in common font?"

"Can you teach me magic?"

"Will you identify this?"

"Can you recharge this?"

"Do you know about this or that?"

"Will you buy/sell this or that?"

Quite fun, really.

Delia's permadeath idea sounds really awesome.
The permadeath characters should somehow be able to keep up with the oldies. Being very strong, have a special ability or just be normal characters that improve very fast... Casual players could join the game, but the oldies could still keep their position of power.
I would find such a character interesting... But I might be a minority as I also like playing a character on the loosing side... Feels more dramatic to me.

Does that mean isengoo retires?

Maybe everyones character should just retire and form an NPC, and we can all start from scratch together and be friends and sit at the crossing! <3

Isen is sub 100 days played but if he had to go too I would be all for it.

Days played doesn't really matter. If you know what you are doing by 50 days played you can have 3 weapons at level 100.
