Weapon descriptions

#1 Post by Yoda » Sun Jul 20, 2008 8:55 am

We need 4-5 descriptions for each of the following weapon types, generic enough to apply either to a one-handed or two-handed version of the weapon (so avoid size or related references).

The weapon types are chain (e.g. spiked ball and chain), crossbow, mace, polearm, rapier, spear, staff and whip.

All contributions appreciated. Weapons with these descriptions will be made available in the game in a few days.

Thanks.

Here's a start. No too fancy descriptions, leaving this to custom items.

elegant rapier
The long blade of this rapier is sharpened along its entire length.
A curved hilt protrudes the ricasso and the straight crosspiece. It
is an axcellent weapon for an agile fencer.

elegant main-gauche (not asked for, buy virtually required)
A left hand dagger to be used in combination with a rapier. With its
wide guard it offers an effective defence against rapiers and swords,
while adding to the fighters offensive potential.

single-tailed bullwhip
This single-tailed bullwhip is plaited from sixteen seperate strips of strong
leather. A wrist loop is attached to the wooden leather-covered handle. The
cracker tied to the end of the whip is a sign of the loudness it can achieve.

nine-tailed whip
This nine-tailed whip is made from a piece of rope that has beed unraveled
over half of its length. Each string ends in a little knot. This whip seems
to be made for punishment.

Heeheeheehee [insert more giggling here] Loves me some descriptions I do.....

Flanged mace : This mace has six metal flanges sticking out from the center of the head. These are thick, solid, and will surely cause damage. The stout handle is wrapped in leather held on with brass tacks.

Simple mace : A primitive but effective weapon, this mace is made of a simple wooden handle and a round head made of hardened clay. The handle sticks out above the head briefly, being quite wide there to hold the head on. It tapers down until a few small ridges are carved to form a handle.

Ceremonial mace : Gilded in gold, covered in bright enamel and wrapped in silver inlay, this is less of a weapon, and more of a work of art. A narrow head rests atop a slender shaft, and is held by a richly embroidered velvet coated handle.

Barbed chain [whip or chain type] : This length of chain has a small weight at one end and a handle at the other. Nasty metal barbs and razor sharp edges are crudely worked into the many links of the chain. It seems the chain would do more damage than the tiny little weight.

Braided whip : The length of this black leather whip is made of three separate thin strips, all held together in a round braid. A small knot holds them closed at the narrow end, with their ends left a bit long for extra sting. The handle is made of wood, wrapped tightly in a complex weave by the same strands that form the body of this well made whip.

Simple maple staff : A wooden staff made of very solid maple wood. The body has a couple of convenient handles carved into it, where small ridges would help the fingers to grip it.

Carved mahogany staff : A staff made of very dark mahogany wood, and decorated with intricate carvings of plants and animals. The carvings are painted, bringing them to life in vivid colors.

Metal staff : The body of this staff is a steel tube with thick walls. Simple handles have been added by layering padding, then riveting soft leather over that and into the staff.

Winged spear : A long, narrow, metal spearhead rests at the end of a slender wooden shaft. Just behind the head, two small, curved pieces of metal curl backwards to make hooks. They are etched simply to make them look sort of like wings.

Heavy spear : A thick, solid wooden shaft tapers slightly before the long metal socket of the broad, leaf shaped head. This weapon appears more for melee use than for throwing.

Bronze spear : The head of this spear is highly polished bronze, shining in any light that hits it. The head is made in a hammered fashion, completely covered in tiny hammer dents for more shine and texture. A narrow shaft is fitted to the head with two rivets.

Javelin [spear] : A narrow body and tiny metal head show this light weapon to be more for throwing than for close in fighting. The steel head is well made, and is fitted tightly onto the shaft with a rivet.

Crude crossbow : A simple crossbow made with a wooden body and stock and an iron bow. The string appears to be forever fraying slightly, and the bow has some rust deeply embedded in it.

Heavy crossbow : The wooden body of this crossbow is often reinforced with metal plating. A large bow of steel is pulled tight by a string that is made of many strands, all twisted together. A ratcheting winch is attached on the side to pull back the string of this mighty weapon.

Bardiche [polearm] : A giant, curved blade is attached to a long wooden handle. The blade's upper point is well past the end of the iron banded handle.

Simple glaive [polearm] : A simple, straight-edged blade rests at the end of a long pole. A small spike protrudes from the back side of this blade, affording some flexibility in combat.

Ornate poleaxe [polearm] : A richly ornamented axe blade rests on top of a long handle. The steel blade has gold inlay forming detailed curls and swirls that end in tiny spirals. The handle is made of highly polished oak, and has more curls and spirals lightly burned into the wood, but underneath the varnish.

Simple morningstar : A simple wooden handle is capped with a piece of iron, that has a metal loop on it. A short chain extends from there, until it ends in an iron ball. This whole thing is simply made.

Rusting morningstar : This morningstar has seen better days. The spiked ball and chain have large patches of scaling rust. The handle is little better, with large chips and dents in the softening wood.

Fancy rapier : Made of expensive materials, this rapier looks nice as well as functional. The basket hilt is made of golden wire worked into elegant curves and the gaps show off the fine red velvet lining. A narrow steel blade comes to a very fine point, and is etched with delicate vines near the hilt.

I could likely write more, but thought I'd save some for others. :D

Edited: A few small grammatical errors were fixed, and one or two very slight modifications made.

So what is exactly is going to happen, are there going to be 4-5 new weapons for each of the types, or are you going to pick 1-2 out of good descriptions for each weapon type

could we vote on which we like best :d

4-5 descriptions for each weapon type will be used to randomly generate weapons of various length, generally of high quality (but the lower quality descriptions posted here can find other homes, so nothing is wasted).

Hefty walnut arbalest
This large variant of the crossbow featuring a broad, blue-shining Dwarven steel prod mounted on a sturdy black walnut heartwood frame, is cocked into firing position by cranking a two-handed cast-iron windlass. Though the entire device has been polished to a dark amber glow, the long bolt groove has been smoothed so meticulously as to appear wet.

ORIGINAL IDEAS NOW ***

There we go i fixed it with whatever i could think of :d

Steel Mace: This mace is made up of a long steel rod, with a spiked steel ball welded to the end of it. The end of the rod is wrapped in padded leather for extra grip and comfort.

Wooden rod: This wooden stick seems to be rougly smoothed, there are still many splinters sticking out of it. Two strips of leather are wrapped around the stick so that it can be wielded in one, or two hands.

Oak staff: This wooden staff seems to be carved from a hard oak-like wood. It is well smoothed, and very light. Fine fur is wrapped around the centre of the staff for grip.

@Ganandorf: By "got from various websites", do you mean you copied the complete description from somewhere, did you reword it, or did you describe a weapon you saw in a picture?

@Eirikeld: Very nice weapons :)
Only the "gilded with gold" of your ceremonial mace sounds a little funny to me, since it can't really be gilded with silver ;)

I also wrote some - five very different chain weapons.
I looked on the web for inspiration as well, and the wording of the first two may still be quite similar to the description of the items I found. But the others are either only inspired by pictures or from my imagination entirely, and I prefer those anyway:

a spiked steel flail (simple, but good condition)
The solid wooden handle of this flail has been wrapped with a black rope for a better grip. Attached on the end of its chain is a steel ball, covered all over in spines, with a single slightly larger spike on top.

a blackened steel flail (evil-looking, but high quality)
This dark and evil looking flail features a chain and long-barbed ball made of blackened steel, attached to a seared wood handle.

a shining steel morningstar (fancy, but practical)
The slender, sleek steel haft of this morning star has been engraved with fancy ornaments, tarnished in their grooves for more contrast. They serve not only as decoration, but also enhance the grip. Two small spiked balls are attached to the haft by strong steel chains.

a thorny steel flail (fancy, possibly too unusual for the purpose?)
The steel haft of this flail has been inlaid with mother-of-pearl ornaments, depicting a thorny rose that shimmers elegantly against the dull, dark grey metal. The chain and spiked ball first appear rather ordinary in comparison, but upon a closer look each spine has a slightly hooked shape, similar to a rose thorn.

a crude bone flail (orkish quality, very likely not at all useful for this purpose, but I still like this one best)
A tshahark thighbone forms the haft of this crude flail-like instrument of destruction, wrapped with a leather strap. The chain is made up entirely of connected vertebrae, but the human skull that serves as a ball is studded all around with sharp iron nails.

While I like some of those descriptions, Ganon, I think that we should use our own, not others. This is our game and our weapons we'll be using.
There are very few personal problems that cannot be solved by a suitable application of high explosives.

Some staves... possibly most are a bit too ornate...

a smooth bo stick (don't know if anything like this exists already, would be a nice thing for the Shaolin)
This smooth stick of pale hardwood is a simple weapon without any handle or decorations, that can comfortably be used both with one or two hands.

a gnarled oak staff (plain and simple)
This thick staff must have been the branch of a mighty old oak. Its twisted and gnarled shape was left unworked except for a smooth polish that makes it comfortable to handle and enhances the natural warm colour of the wood.

a rune-covered redwood staff (for the mages)
Carvings of arcane symbols wind around the reddish wood of this staff, delicately inlaid with silver. Red leather forms a grip around its middle, and the top is capped with a silvery metal orb about the size of a man’s fist.

a pale sapphire-set staff (a ceremonial staff for Taniels/Crusaders)
This pale wooden staff is capped with an ornamental silver setting that frames a single large sapphire. Pictures of angelic beings surround the entire silver tip, which tapers to a delicate silver arrow/cross above the jewel. Around the middle of the more prestigious than practical staff, dark blue velvet forms a comfortable handle.

a red crystal-capped staff (more of a status symbol)
Golden decorations form an elegant frame for this staff of dark reddish wood. A large crystal sits atop in a calyx-like setting formed by rising flames of gold filigree, the light reflecting from it in different shades of burgundy. Around the middle of the more prestigious than practical staff, red velvet forms a comfortable handle.

Could some of the old Legion weapons/armours be recycled into use again, only with appropriately lowered quality of course. It would be a nice way of having some living history as well as some new gear for people to toy with. Given how long the Legion was active it is not that impropable a stockpile or two remained...

This of course would require either the admins still having the legio files or the old players having the descs on logs or something. Just a thought.

Some legion armours still remain. If i remember correctly it was coded so they could no longer be repaired so they would eventually dissappear but someone might have some stored away. Would not be nice imo if someone went through the trouble to preserve them just to have them plentiful again. Of course while typing this I sound to myself like im trying to take fun away from others.
