I don't mind the mana costs in general, but I think they are a bit high for at least some of the appraisals you do, especially considering that even with perfect (100) appraise skills the result can be faulty and may require a couple of tries.
When using the appraise ground option when searching for herbs the herbing gets totally out of hands, manawise that is. And since not everyone has a nice breeze miracle that restores mana on the fly, it makes herbing a real nuisance.

I do agree that the mana cost can be somewhat high if appraise ground is used extensively. Seldom one needs to appraise every room though. With general appraise I do not see problems as it seem to be out only when your are veggie/near veggie.
Then again, this is all from Delia's perspective. A tshahark might have it rather hard, I guess.
