alchemists and wands stuffs

If it's no bug or an idea, but it's still MUD-related, it goes here.

alchemists and wands stuffs

#1 Post by Valmorian » Mon Dec 11, 2017 6:37 pm

unless we get some sort of alchemy related spell I don't actually see why the guild teaches them at all as it isn't even remotely related to the art of potionmaking and lots of people join just because you have a chance to learn wand magics later. I'd be interested in hearing others thoughts on the matter though, kind of kills rp for me at least

Personally, I'd like it if the alchemy guild spells were more useful in alchemy. I already wrote a few ideas about this in the other thread, but transmutation of materials would also be really cool and fit the alchemical theme.

There are a couple of spells atleast that would be useful for alchemists also a few thematically appropriate but unfortunately they are completely out of reach for alchemists at the moment.

Also lv1 spells are really limited in what they can do. Some lv1 effects are naturally more immediately useful than others. Light and detect magic for example.

Lv3 starts to feel useful in my eyes and combat effects are also felt at this level but getting there takes time. Training from the ground up with wands alone is very, very difficult when compared to scrolls.

Anyways, being able to learn spells at level 1 from teacher and then upgrading them with "mantra upgrade" command should be a given.

The magic system is very nicely done and it would be nice if more than 1-2 people could have more access to it.

It would ease the job of mage masters too if players could have more experience with the magic system.

So far magejoin always triggers an OOC information overload cascade that sees no end.

Mages are notorious for their OOC use and we have migrated to slack where we handle mage business.

Huh, I'd honestly consider that a pretty big issue in itself. The last one I mean, I can't comment on any OOC information that may still be hidden from me prior to properly joining, even if I've learned bits and pieces along the way. ^^

edit to contribute something more on topic:

I will note that alchemists having magic is a bit confusing too. Not that it doesn't make sense, just that it's confusing. Alchemy itself is noted to being the study of the elements, but this isn't emphasised much. Might be just a RP thing though, perhaps full alchemists ought to take time to impress this fact upon newer players?

Like, pointing out how alchemy itself only happens when you use fire to mix earth (plants and other ingredients), water, and air (boiling water), involving all the elements together.

However, wand magic in particular feels a bit out of place, because wands seem to have little to do with alchemy. If the spells alchemists used with them changed, that might help a lot, but my other issue here is mechanical.

The scribes learn the building blocks of writing scrolls from day one. Alchemists don't learn any building blocks for wands until they're full alchemists: the set of skills involved are actually completely unrelated.

This could probably be partially resolved by at least letting alchemists learn some of them a bit early, perhaps teach the language skills upfront (though requiring them for advancement would be odd, which only further serves to show how out of place they are), and giving wand components some alchemical properties so alchemists have a chance to work with them early like scribes do.

To be honest, I could see wands separated from alchemists totally. Maybe full alchemists get some transmutation stuff in its place, like converting ingredients, refining potions, changing base metals, etc. perhaps it could involve a making philosopher's stone of some kind, and maybe wands get their own hedgemage guild that serves as a very official "intro to magic" layman's guild for people who wanna be mages but don't want to also be alchemists or scribes.

That's thinking really longterm though. ^^;

The public mantras are only available for the first three levels: yen, yor, yar
The levels above are reserved for mages.
There are 14 public mantras for wands at the moment.
The exsiting mantras can be replace by other, if other better fit.
If someone has a good idea for such mantra, we can do so.
There are always the way to hire a mage, who researchs a new public
mantra for the alchmenists.

Then perhaps instead of asking for magical fixes from the wizards, I can make this into a character goal and play it out ICly someday. ^^

That said, you said 14. Are the higher level ones hidden? I only see six. I'll find out eventually if they're hidden by skill requirements, since I haven't stopped grinding, and I'm woefully short of what that requirement might be for a few, but it sounded like the higher level scroll mantras just weren't hidden in such a way, according to Arsicas, just blocked off. Might be an unintended inconsistency if true.

This could be a reason enough for my character to leave the scribes and join the alchemists to do some research.

Yes, the next level public mantras showed up for me once I hit the required magic arts level. So when I hit 'yor' the yor mantras showed up, and when I hit 'yar' the yar spells showed up. It could be there are no yor mantras for alchemists?

Personally, it seems that flare should be available for wands. It also seemed a bit weird that light and dark minor were available for wands but not light and dark major.
