iunno terribly much about guns, but i do know "alot" about the desert eagle .50AE.

1. big ass pistol
2. used in many action movies because it is so big and looks better on camera than smaller pistols like glocks (at least in my experience)
3. ae stands for action express, and .50 means .50 calibur which is a huge bullet for a pistol.

and no i didn't google it just now =P id say i know a moderate amount about guns, certainly not as much as most -americans-.

another pistol i like is a socom. those things look really sleek.

I live in a family of gun collectors, so I could almost guarantee you I could find a gun that's more practical and less overrated than a desert eagle.

And BTW, nothing really beats a Glock 7, if you get down to it.

EDIT: Okay, a little research done, a Taurus .45 seems to be a good alternative. Easier to clean and handle, good balance, and a .45 hollow-point will do essentially the same amount of damage as a .50, and get more distance as well, since a heavier bullet will drop faster.

And I still stand by the statement that the DE is a choice of pistol for many that know little about them, especially if the 'perks' are simply because it's big or used by movie stars, and further if they've never actually personally handled one. Everyone has their different preference, and unless you've handled a DE, it's hard to say whether it's the gun for you or not. For myself, smaller ones are much easier to handle and aim, and less kick-back from a shot is usually a nice perk when you have a hard time keeping a firm hand. Bigger doesn't always necessarily mean better.

1911 Colt .45 SA best semi-auto in my opinion (at least that I have shot).

For accuracy, semi-auto's are terrible choices, revolvers are superior. Derringers are about the worst out there for accuracy though a popular choice for self-defense due to the incredibly compact size.

Yes, semi automatic pistols are horrible when it comes to accuracy.
Mostly because the barrel has no rifling. Rifling will keep the bullet stable as it travels. Revolvers usually have rifling, semi autos usually have none at all.
Also, the longer the barrel, the more rifling it has.....so the more accurate it is.

However, semi automatics have hella stopping power if you shoot them from a very close distance.

Revolvers are better than semis when it comes to accuracy, yes. And longer barrels do give better accuracy, though I usually prefer shorter barreled guns since they tend to be lighter and easier for me to handle.

Derringers are meant more for close encounters, too.

Honestly, I don't get the fascination with large caliber guns. Even a .22 will kill someone, might not cause damage if the bullet doesn't hit a vital spot, but with some skill, a .22 round can be just as deadly as a .50

Actually, my favorite gun I've ever fired was a S&W .38 special. I don't know why I like it so much, I just do.

I think firearms are the one thing that sets america so far apart culturally from other countries. Yes, I am saying firearms is a huge part of american culture. More so than television, hollywood, or american muscle cars. They've been around since the beginning of the nation, the fact that everyone had one is what helped the 13 colonies win the revolutionary war, and so on. Personally, I could never imagine living in a country where I would be denied the access to arm myself. Anyways, I'm still waiting to get my concealed carry permit, once I get that, I may actually buy my own pistol. Glock 19 maybe?

I agree with Grindel, here in Spain we barely know that are different "calibers" and we wouldn't know at all if not thanks to the foreign films.

And personally, I find this discussion rather disturbing...

Well, when you come to "the South" or in rural/country areas of the US, they're pretty much treated that way. It's not unusual to find gun collectors around here, and I'd say nearly every household around here has a shotgun at the least. And there's people who will polish and clean their guns lovingly or go take them out for some shooting practice for fun (against inanimate objects, of course).

But then, most appreciate guns like one might appreciate recreational hobbies like archery, rather than for killing people or using them as instruments of death (with the exception of hunting) like so many of our movies might suggest.

Though, it's been a running gag out here that if terrorists ever tried to invade the US, "the South" would offer them the most opposition, since a lot of people around here have guns and aren't the types to back down from anyone. Tennessee pride, holler.

Anyway while we're on the topic, what I find amusing is how America treats violence casually but condemns nudity as the work of Satan, yet other countries out there seem to treat violence as the dark sin of mankind but treat nudity like the natural condition it is. Or at least that's the impression I've been given.
