Just curious... Does the Crusade have jurisdiction over Elvandar or any particular part of the world? Or do they just kind of bash all evil-doers wherever? Do they "officially" work in tandem with law enforcement of the cities, or are they more an independent, self-declared police force?

They are basically the World Police. If the Pope or some other religious figure had an army big enough and strong enough to police the world that would emulate something like the Crusade is. We don't have any real law power over anything. All we have is our word and strength of arm. Really any band of decently big players could do the exact same thing we do without being in a guild.

"Independent, self-declared police force" is not far from the mark, but they do act on the authority of Taniel and Evren, independent of earthly laws and even, to some extent, of the church of Taniel. "World police" is correct in the sense that they police the world, more than that there is some sort of international agreement to actually let them do this - and in their eyes, they enforce the only law that truly matters.

You might say that Taniel speaks to both the Archbishop and the Lord/Lady Marshall, but he says different things. The former is something like his chief representative, and the latter is something like his chief executioner (here, they have done something which in the Geas world is punishable by death). This oversimplifies matters just a bit, but it is probably what the average outsider to the two guilds would understand.

In the history of the Catholic Church, I can't think of a proper analog, since the Church's various military orders have always (at least on paper) answered to the Pope. The Archbishop, for that matter, is no pope, as there is no one who pretends her teachings on faith and morals are infallible.

I'm not certain if it has since changed, but it use to be Tanielites and Evrenites only. Clergy or otherwise.
