Stolen items in a locker

Roleplay wise i dont understand why one can't store stolen items into ones locker, The locker guards give a message similar too "hmm i think that belongs somewhere else." How/why do they assume its stolen, they didnt witness the crime, If you successfully lift an item no one supposedly saw you with it, so i dont see why you cant store it in your locker.

That too, it's really really wierd

I could understand like An in game day later when a shopkeeper reports that his items are missing
but like an in game hour away, i find that a bit harsh

My concern with this is that Ancale, was given an item, as a gift, legitimately, but I know OOCly that the item was stolen at one point. She however doesnt, but its annoying carrying around it all the time because I cant store it. And its not like she could find out who it belongs to either...

So can this be changed at all?
Or Anyone know why RP-wise this was done?

The stolen tag was created to nerf the incredible power of thieves somewhat, as far as I can tell. "Hot" items can only be sold at a fence and cannot be stored in lockers. While it doesn't absolutely hold up RP-wise (how can they tell?) it's hard-coded to make stolen things more difficult to keep and represents another way that invisible NPC actions influence the game.

The only thing that really is tough about the "hot" items thing is that other PCs can find out that your stuff is stolen with almost no trouble, thus blowing your cover or getting you into trouble. Alas, that's not quite something wrong as another layer of difficulty.

The code has its limitations: once an item is stolen, even if it returns to legitimate trade, it will still be marked.

I've not had any trouble with asking wizards to remove the stolen tag from things that should not have had them, such as a personal custom item. If you can prove that the item in question would be obviously known to be yours and not stolen, they might assist you with being able to store it.

Poor thieves...

Doesn't make a lot of sense IC-wise.

Or I just completely fail to see what sense it makes...
