port 80 is the HTML web port :P It's likely already open. 449 is used for active server stuff I think.
poDrayn, YES, thats precisely the trick! Every admin _will_ allow connections to port 80, we just would have to offer it on an alternate ip... (449 is secure http, by the way.)

Our poor, currently blocked players could then connect to the mud using <alternateIP>:<port 80>, and nearly nobody could block them, because the admin would think the user uses http ... got it?
SSL is port 443 actually :)

How about port 21? FTP is pretty common (if massively unsecure). Or maybe port 22? Usually open for SSH stuff.

Gotta be a port on here SOMEWHERE:

Also, this port talk has derailed the absence thread somewhat. Could our friendly neighbourhood forum mod perform a tangentectomy maybe?

Being absentish...between work'n'stuff and having fully planned weekends for some weeks to come, I will not probably find the time to participate. I'll be around checking boards, mails, gossip and such but finding quality Geas time for more than 30-60 mins is rather hard for now though plans may fail/change(being a rather inefficient gamer I usually find almost one hour already spent with only logging in accomplished). Anyways, have fun!

Just an update on my absence:

Web access is difficult. My PC and laptop are both still broken, my phone is my only internet, which means I can check the forum here, but I can't MUD :(

This looks set to continue for a while I'm afraid :(

Dude, you're a linux guy, right? Do you have a live cd sitting around? If you have a thumb drive, you could probably install puppy linux or something to get one of your computers in semi-working order.

Done that :D

I was having trouble with casper making a persistence file (without which all files and installed programs get lost), got it working now though. I'm slowly getting the system back to a good level of working order and I'll hopefully get back to gaming soon. Fingers crossed.

The only two programs with which I may reliably play Geas have faltered, one's trial expiring, and the other currently corrupting whenever I try to use it. Dunno when I will be able to buy the one. Until then, sorry folks. :(

What's the name and the problem of the corrupting one? Can you describe the crashes, or copy any error messages?

Or just use telnet until you get yourself sorted.

It is indeed my mudclients, and telnet is god-awful. As for error crashes, I dunno. ZMUD's support stopped a good long while ago, so I'm not going to find help on that front.

I personally can recommend TinyFugue aka tf.

I run it on Windows (cygwin), OS X and Linux. Have been using it since '91 and never found a better one.

You don't need official support. My ZMUD's broken down a few times, and I've fixed it every time with google searches and personal troubleshooting.

Upon attempting to run it, ZMUD causes my entire computer to freeze, before finally giving me a BSOD. Then, upon boot, I'm forced to run a CHKDSK. This has happened three times now, one of which was running it as an admin. It's not a virus, I've had this copy for a long long time, it's just... not agreeing with my computer in the least.

Weird, I've never had any major problems with my Zmud. Don't recall the version number, I guess it was either 7.04 or 7.2x. Alias list crashes sometimes but it is nothing major as they remain usable. Then again I have not updated my computer in ages either.

OK, that's quite a serious problem. It's possibly a registry issue, now that you've dropped out of the trial, it might be sending a bad registry call. Quite a lot of stuff works off the registry in Windows. Try completely removing zMUD and run a registry cleaning program (because uninstalling rarely cleans the registry).
